There is a quote by Elsie De Wolfe that stayed with me from my early childhood – “I am going to make everything around me beautiful and that will be my life” At the time, I didn’t know how impactful this would be for me, but I sure see it now. The home can be every child’s most loved space. My love for home decor began there, and I have been on the same path ever since. Beauty as an archetype is something everyone relates to, but true beauty can be experienced only when you live beautifully. This has been my source of inspiration behind every project.

Payal is the founder of The Charcoal Room, a Home Décor Consultation and Styling firm based in Mumbai since 2008. Research, play of material and extremely refined design sensibility defines her style. Her aim is to tastefully transform every site into a balanced environment, keeping three factors in mind: harmony, beauty and justice. Her magnetic nature and radiant persona reflect in her design and work ethic, leaving a timeless impression.

The Charcoal Room, over the past few years, has emerged as a leading full-service Luxury Home Décor and Styling firm. While based out of Mumbai, our firm has worked across the country, from weekend getaways, to permanent residences and all the way to commercial and institutional spaces. Through these experiences, we are known in the industry for our bespoke services and intimate approach to getting to know our clients personal styles.

The Charcoal Room is a multidisciplinary design firm led by principal founder Payal Shah. Our creative and technical staff is grouped into teams that follow projects all the way through from concept to completion. We are a lean team striving constantly to create projects that stand out because of our distinct approach towards design, detail and above all customization.

The practice believes in working with the client to develop an overarching concept which drives a project and becomes a shared journey, with The Charcoal Room delivering above and beyond in terms of commitment, quality and vision. The aim of the practice is to create spaces that are endearing and beautiful, where the feeling speaks louder than the furnishings and the levels of charm and comfort outweigh the instant gratification of the merely new.
